M2M (M to M) is short for Machine-to-Machine, which refers to the exchange of data between a remote machine and a back-end IT infrastructure without requiring human intervention. M2M technology allows data to be transferred automatically in two ways: 1) upwards, e.g. to collect information from equipment or to monitor physical conditions in the field; 2) downwards, e.g. to broadcast instructions, to update software or to monitor a fleet from a centralized control center.
M2M is different from IoT. While M2M technology specifically concerns machines communicating with each other, IoT is a broader term. In particular, within the Internet of Things we distinguish four building blocks: hardware, connectivity, back-end and applications. M2M is one type of connectivity for IoT solutions and can be seen as part of the overall concept of IoT.
SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module or Subscriber Identification Module and is a small memory card that contains unique information to identify itself to a specific network. An M2M SIM card needs to be placed in an IoT device so that the device can connect to a mobile network.
We offer various types of SIM cards:
- Business Grade SIM card: the standard M2M SIM card that consists of a chip mounted onto a plastic card. This plastic card can be plugged into a device, which is why it is also called the Plug-in SIM card. The SIM has a temperature range of -25 to +70 degrees Celsius and is suitable for applications such as navigation equipment, tablets, smart meters, office equipment and security alarms. We offer various Business Grade SIM formats:
• 2FF – Mini SIM (25 x 15 mm)
• 3FF – Micro SIM (15 x 12 mm)
• 4FF – Nano SIM (12.3 x 8.8 mm)
- Industrial Grade SIM card: special M2M SIM cards developed for extreme environments. They are more robust and shockproof, with a distinctive coating and enhanced chip qualities to limit erosion and extend the lifespan of the SIMs. The temperature range of these M2M SIMs is -40 to +105 degrees Celsius.
- Chip SIM, also known as the embedded SIM or eUICC (Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card): with this option you use only the chip of the SIM. This chip can be mounted directly onto the printed circuit board in the device. So the SIM becomes part of the device and cannot be taken out later on, making it extremely shock resistant. These M2M SIMs are the norm in the automotive industry.
