KPN IoT provides global satellite coverage with Skylo
We have partnered up with Skylo to make our global coverage even better. How? By intelligently combining mobile networks with satellite networks. IoT devices can now automatically switch to a satellite connection in the (temporary) absence of mobile coverage. This means that your devices stay connected, even in the most remote places on earth.
Connected anytime, anywhere
Mobile coverage is guaranteed in most parts of the Netherlands and, with over 600 roaming partners, coverage is usually reliable worldwide. However, some blind spots remain. "That's when satellite connectivity comes into its own," says Bram van den Nouweland, Commercial Product Manager IoT Connectivity at KPN IoT. Additional satellite coverage can be useful in multiple situations, e.g. for offshore environments, remote construction sites or extensive agricultural areas. With satellite coverage, you’re still able to continuously transmit data from these locations. For the purpose of asset tracking, emergency communications or geological monitoring, for example. "Skylo sends data from an IoT device directly to a satellite, which then forwards it to the KPN network through a ground station."
Seamless integration without complex hardware
The technology behind the partnership between KPN and Skylo is based on 3GPP standards. This makes it possible to seamlessly integrate mobile networks with satellite networks. And, more importantly: using relatively simple hardware. Not via large satellite dishes but compact modules that fit in virtually any IoT device. "This makes it a practical and scalable solution for sectors like logistics, agriculture, energy and the emergency services," Bram says.
Getting started with satellite connectivity
Interested in satellite connectivity for your company? We're here to help and will always offer you the best subscription for your needs. However, your device must be able to connect to the satellite network. To do this, it must be compliant with 3GPP standards and be certified by Skylo. Of course, we are happy to help you with this too.

Dekkers and KPN IoT transform the tap
From branding tool to ecosystem
The tap lens isn't the end point but the starting point. Dekkers is now developing menu-screen links that activate changes to the screen behind the bar, for example to reflect the brand in question whenever a ‘tap action’ takes place. Imagine a fully branded bar: as soon as a customer orders a beer, a campaign launches on the tap lenses, the menu screens change, and even the lighting around the bar is customized to suit the brand in question. This turns a simple tapping moment into a real brand experience, making your brand both visible and unforgettable.
“We build an ecosystem around the ordering event,” Dekkers concludes. “And you can expand on this with QR codes, discounts on goals during a Champions League match, or predictive maintenance based on tap data. The possibilities are endless.”
A summary of the advantages of the smart tap lens:
- Real-time content management: push your campaign to thousands of locations worldwide simultaneously.
- Operational efficiency: no more physical switches, just plug-and-play installation.
- Data insights: analyze tap times, volumes and behavior per location.
- Safe and reliable: not dependent on connections managed by third parties but dedicated IoT connectivity.
