Connected heat pumps: the future of sustainable living
Making homes more sustainable requires smart technology. In a pilot project, Comfort Partners is collaborating with housing corporation Ymere to replace traditional boilers with connected heat pumps. Reliable connectivity from kpn IoT enables more efficient maintenance, lower energy costs, and increased comfort for tenants, making the energy transition achievable, efficient, and affordable.
By 2030, the Netherlands aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels, with a goal to be fully climate-neutral by 2050. Making rental properties more sustainable is a vital part of that target. To achieve these goals, housing corporations need to accelerate their sustainability efforts—reducing energy consumption, implementing innovative techniques, and managing costs for tenants.
Ymere is committed to this mission, making homes more energy-efficient without compromising tenant comfort. “Ymere is the largest housing corporation in the Netherlands, managing 74,000 homes in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. Our primary mission is to ensure future-proof housing that is affordable and energy-efficient,” says Pablo van der Laan, strategic advisor for property management at Ymere.
Pilot project with Comfort Partners
In a pilot program with Comfort Partners, Ymere is replacing traditional boilers with connected hybrid heat pumps. A connected hybrid heat pump combines the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability of a boiler and utilizes smart technology to monitor and optimize performance remotely. Comfort Partners, a TBI company, manages and maintains these installations.
Kpn IoT connectivity is the backbone of this system. Through kpn IoT’s routers and connectivity, the heat pumps continuously exchange data with Comfort Partners’ central monitoring system. This enables Comfort Partners to monitor heat pump performance in real-time, conduct faster maintenance, and better instruct tenants on efficient use.
Remote control of heat pumps
“Connecting heat pumps is incredibly important,” states Jim Commandeur, manager of Comfort Connect at Comfort Partners. “The connectivity enables faster, more efficient problem analysis, leading to optimized scheduling and deployment of technicians. This is crucial in an aging labor market, reduces inconvenience for residents, and extends the lifespan of the systems. In the future, we aim to control the heat pumps remotely, which would sometimes eliminate the need for an on-site technician.”
Real-time monitoring also allows for a concrete understanding of energy usage, helping tenants manage their energy consumption. This results in lower costs for residents and supports Ymere’s ambition to offer sustainable, affordable housing. “Affordable energy bills are essential for our residents,” notes Van der Laan.
A big step toward energy neutrality
By installing these heat pumps, Ymere aims to make a significant leap toward energy-neutral housing. Smart technology ensures efficient maintenance and optimally functioning systems. “Data-driven maintenance is a priority for us because it allows us to act faster and more efficiently,” Van der Laan concludes.
“For us, it’s essential that data is always secure and exchanged according to the latest standards, ensuring compliance with current laws and regulations,” Commandeur adds. “Kpn IoT is a vital partner in this regard, supporting us with their expertise and reliable technology.”
